The second actor cast in Paramount’s upcoming ‘Sonic the Hedgehog’ movie is Tika Sumpter.  She joins James Marsden who was announced as playing the film’s human lead about two weeks ago.  Marsden will reportedly play Tom, a policeman who teams up with Sonic to take down the villainous Doctor Eggman.  Sumpter’s role, however, has not been disclosed.

‘Sonic the Hedgehog’ is, of course, an adaptation of the popular Sega video game character, who made his debut in 1991 and has appeared in dozens of games ever since, not to mention a popular cartoon series, toys, and other licensed materials.

Jeff Fowler, whose 2005 animated short ‘Gopher Broke’ was nominated for an Academy Award, has been tapped to helm his first theatrical film which will be a mix of live action and CGI animation.  The screenplay was first written by Patrick Casey and Josh Miller, with Oren Uziel handling the most recent draft.  Neal H. Moritz is producing, with Tim Miller (‘Deadpool’) and Toby Ascher (‘Sleeping Dogs’) executive producing.

Sumpter’s role may not even be in live action, as she has also done voice work, portraying Quinn on the TBS animated series ‘Final Space’.  Until recently, she played Candace on the Tyler Perry series ‘The Haves and the Have Nots’.  She re-teamed with Perry for the film ‘The List’ which co-stars Tiffany Haddish and Whoopi Goldberg and will be released on November 2, 2018.  Sumpter also stars in the thriller ‘The Pages’ which also features Jamie Lee Curtis. While that film is in post-production, there is no release date scheduled.  Sumpter has also appeared in ‘The Ride Along’ and ‘The Ride Along 2’ and will return in ‘The Ride Along 3’ which has not begun production and does not yet have a release date.  Her prior TV credits include ‘On Life To Live’, ‘Gossip Girl’ and ‘The Game’.

Though ‘Sonic the Hedgehog’ is only in pre-production, it already has a release date of November 15, 2019, locked in, although that will likely change.
