Starting off, make sure you click below and actually watch this trailer, it is pretty amazing (no pun intended). Sony might have a genuine hit on their hands if this is any indication here, as their latest trailer for ‘Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse’ hits all the right notes and left me feeling exceptionally excited for the movie when it premieres this winter.
With new cast announcements that include Hailee Steinfeld (Spider-Gwen), Mahershala Ali (Aaron Davis), Jake Johnson (Peter Parker), Liev Schreiber (Kingpin), Brian Tyree Henry (Miles’ father, Jefferson), Luna Lauren Velez (Miles’ mother, Rio) and Lily Tomlin (Aunt May), the movie definitely has some star power behind it, but the trailer shows that they are not relying on the voice-work alone to carry the film. And of course there’s Shameik Moore as Miles Morales himself, whose voice seems perfect for the character, and really delivers a lot in this trailer. Which is saying something because this is the first trailer where we got to hear Jake Johnson’s performance as Peter Parker/ Spider-Man, and he seems to be a scene-stealer as well, delivering just the right mix of comedy, wisdom, and forlornness that one would imagine would be Peter Parker’s wit later in life after everything that has happened to him.
The trailer itself really shows off the animation style of the film, the blending of 3D and 2D, the comic-book panel styles, and even what looks like some stop-motion animation (or something that imitates that style), and makes this feel utterly different than any ‘Spider-Man’ or animated comic-book movie that has come before. And with the action, the voice-performances, the surprise appearance of Spider-Gwen at the end, this movie looks to have A LOT going for it!
I am completely on-board for whatever other fun ideas Phi Lord and Christopher Miller have in store for us. Winter 2018 cannot get here soon enough! But don’t take my word for it, check out the trailer for yourself below and leave your thoughts in the comments section!
