Paramount Pictures still hasn’t opened up much on where they’re taking the G.I. Joe films but at least one spinoff movie has been confirmed featuring Snake Eyes! Evan Spiliotopoulos (‘Beauty and the Beast’) has been tapped to write the script and Brian Goldner will be producing the film. Anyone else behind or in front of the camera has yet to be revealed.
Assuming this is set in the continuity of 2009’s ‘G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra’ and 2013’s ‘G.I. Joe: Retaliation,’ we’ll likely see Ray Park reprising the role of this covert ninja. However, without any solid details, this could even prove to be a stand-alone or soft reboot as the studio hasn’t been able to find quite the solid footing that they’d gained with the ‘Transformers’ franchise.
Snake Eyes is G.I. Joe’s head ninja. He doesn’t speak and depending on the origin story he either no longer is able to or has chosen not to. He is also often depicted as having had his face having been disfigured which is why he always wears a mask.
His arch enemy is Storm Shadow who was played by Lee Byung-hun in both of the previous films. Likely, a Snake Eyes-centric story would also include Cobra’s head ninja. The two were rivals from their time growing up together and whose fates seem to be entwined. Again, it isn’t clear if this will be a reboot or if Byung-hun may be returning.
If the film isn’t a full-on reboot, it wouldn’t be too surprising to see one or two small cameos from previous stars of the franchise.
Are you looking forward to a Snake Eyes movie? Do you think Paramount will use this as a stand-alone, a continuation of the current two films, or be a planned soft reboot of the franchise? Share your thoughts below!
