Margot Robbie stole the show as Harley Quinn in David Ayer‘s ‘Suicide Squad’ which dominated the box office late last summer, so it was no surprise that Warner Brothers quickly signed Robbie to reprise the role in her own movie, which she would also executive produce with Ayer returning to direct.  But just to be safe,WB decided that rather than force Harley to fly solo, they would give her two big name partners in crime, Catwoman and Poison Ivy and that her “solo” movie would actually be ‘Gotham City Sirens’ based on the team-up comic book of the same name.

In December, there were rumblings that Megan Fox might be taking on the role of Poison Ivy (which hopefully won’t turn out to be true).  Now it seems that the new Catwoman may have been found– Haley Bennett.

29 year-old Bennett has made waves in recent years with roles in ‘The Girl On The Train’, ‘The Magnificent Seven’ and ‘The Equalizer’ among others.  Her work has been somewhat physical which would lend itself to the role of Gotham City’s resident acrobatic thief.

But where did the buzz of this possible casting originate?  Why from Bennett herself, who posted an image of Catwoman on Instagram:

Bennett did not provide a caption, so it’s hard to draw anything conclusive from this posting.  It’s possible she is just lobbying for the part.  And what up-and-comer wouldn’t?

It’s not really clear when ‘Gotham City Sirens’ will begin production, considering that it was not part of Warner Brothers’ original release schedule for its DC Comics movies.  It’s also unclear how ‘Sirens’ will connect with the Ben Affleck-starring ‘The Batman’ which is currently struggling with Affleck vacating the director’s chair.

BenAffleck-BatmanSpeaking of Affleck, the Academy Award-winner is 49 years-old, twenty full years older than Bennett.  And Batman and Catwoman have always shared a romantic/sexual connection.  May-December romances are nothing new in movies, but this may be hard for viewers to swallow.

Should Bennett land the role as Selina Kyle, she will follow in the footsteps of Anne Hatheway, Halle Berry, Michelle Pfeiffer, Eartha Kitt, Lee Meriwether and Julie Newmar, who have all brought the classic character to life in various adaptations.

Bennett will next be seen in the music-themed ‘Song to Song’ which features an all-star cast including former Batman Christian Bale, along with Ryan Gosling, Natalie Portman and Michael Fassbender among others and will be released in March.  She will also appear opposite Miles Teller and Amy Schumer in military drama ‘Thank You For Your Service’, which is complete but has not been scheduled for release.

Would Haley Bennett make a good Catwoman?  Or should the role go to an older actor?
