Picking the highlights from ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ is a tall order to say the least. But it’d be hard to find anyone who didn’t agree that the scenes that Thor shares with the Guardians of the Galaxy is not on that list. Perhaps unsurprisingly, a particular standout in those scenes was Drax, thanks in no small part to actor David Bautista’s impeccable comedic instincts.
But the thing about scenes like those is that they depend as much on the chemistry between the characters involved as on the chemistry between the actors portraying them. In other words, not everything that makes those scenes work is on the printed page of the script, and even with the best writers, not all of it can be. And as we’ve learned following the release of ‘Infinity War’, a number of fan-favorite moments were actually improvised on the set. The most famous example might be Tom Holland’s final lines, but it also includes, as you may have guessed by now, one of Drax’s best lines, which brilliantly cuts the tension in an early exchange between Star Lord and Iron Man. As co-writer Christopher Markus explains to Yahoo:
“The script only said “Where is Gamora?” “I’ll do you even better: Who is Gamora?” And then one day Bautista just goes, “I’ll do you one better: Why is Gamora?” It’s like, “Okay, you’re very good at your job.”
Directed by the Russo brothers from a script by Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely, ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ marks the culmination of a decade-long effort by Marvel Studios and sees the Avengers team up with the Guardians of the Galaxy to take on Thanos. The film counts Robert Downey Jr., Scarlett Johansson, Mark Ruffalo, Tom Holland, Karen Gillan, Paul Rudd, Chadwick Boseman, Benedict Cumberbatch, Elizabeth Olson, Sebastian Stan, and three gentlemen named “Chris” among its gargantuan cast. The long-awaited movie is in theaters now, while ‘Avengers 4’ is set to arrive on May 3, 2019.
