We know that “The End” is coming to Marvel’s ‘Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’ but it still isn’t clear if ABC is bringing back the show or not. While the creators are giving us what will be a “satisfying” end to the season that could also serve as a series finale they want everyone to know that there is “more story to tell.”

Producers Jed Whedon, Jeffrey Bell, and Maurissa Tancharoen recently sat down to share a bit of how they tackled the season finale and while they don’t drop hints of what could be beyond it if ABC renews them, clearly have ideas.

Whedon shares that:

“Every episode’s a series finale if we don’t get to make any more of them. The way we’re approaching it is… we believe, even at the end of a story, there’s always more story to tell.”

So they have an idea of what direction the series could take after “The End,” and Tancharoen agreed by stating:

“We approach the end of every season the same way, which is… we never really know if we’re going to get another one until we’re towards the end of our shooting anyway, so our goal is to either be able to satisfy either way.”

While Whedon agrees that they “think it will be satisfying” it is clear that they’ve “planned” for the worst case scenario of not being picked up to tell more of this story. I, for one, hope that ABC makes the right call and we get to see S.H.I.E.L.D. protect Earth for at least one more outing.

As to how the producers have tried to craft every season and what stood out for this one? Bell chimed in that:

“Every year we try and arc out a story that begins one place and answers all the questions we’ve brought up… and I think this year, we’ve looked back more over the last seasons as well, like in the 100th episode we did, we tried to remind people of some of [the show’s history] and that’s true as we go forward for the rest of the season.”
