Fans of FX’s ‘Legion’ who are familiar with the character of David Haller are dying for a father-son reunion in the film. As the son of Charles Xavier, we’ve all wanted a Professor X appearance and bringing on the iconic Patrick Stewart to revise his role from the cinematic X-Men universe would be the icing on the cake for this already fantastic show.
The problem getting in the way isn’t rights, a lack of interest on Patrick Stewart‘s part, or anything along those lines. It just ends up being corporate politics.
According to showrunner Noah Hawley:
“It’s not a rights issue or a legal issue, it’s more about corporate synergy. There are a lot of people with opinions and strategies for franchise development. But I think we’ll be victorious in the end because our hearts are pure.”
I can’t even imagine why an executive would be against this idea unless they have a cousin who is bald or looks excellent in a bald cap that they’re trying to get the part for.
Insiders have reported that Stewart wasn’t able to get on set to film any scenes in the second season so we’ll have to hope for a third season pick up and for Disney to own the company at that time and be willing to bring Stewart into the fold.
Even without the father and son relationship, or lack of one, many of Haller’s most classic story arcs are intimately tied to Xavier. From Xavier being the one who had banished the Shadow King to the astral plane or helps his son understand and control his powers, many critical moments could be used on the show.
