Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.

Sending Director Coulson and the last of S.H.I.E.L.D. not only into space but the future was a big jump for ‘Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.‘ and there was a substantial reason behind it. While there have been references to events that happened in the Marvel films, the reason for the change in the series actually had nothing to do with the release of ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2’ as some thought. The cause of it all was recently shared by executive producers Jed Whedon and Maurissa Tancharoen at WonderCon 2018.

According to Whedon:

“Last year was a real kitchen sink year. We had a lot of stuff going on. We did alt world. We did Ghost Rider. We did LMDs. So we did two different versions of alternate versions of ourselves, and so we were thinking ‘Where can we go that’s different.'”

The writers ran the gambit on giving us unique new stories but they weren’t done as we’ve seen so far. Tancharoen sums it up best by sharing:

“Mack’s line sort of reflects what we were thinking in the writer’s room. He turns to Coulson and goes ‘We’re in space. It’s the one thing we haven’t done yet.’ So it was definitely an area that we had been contemplating for a while.”

This wasn’t a spur of the moment plot change but something that was on the writers’ minds “for a while” so you have to wonder what they’ve got in store for the rest of this season. Not only that, but how will they top it going forward if ABC does renew the show for another year?

Even they might not know as it sounds like the space story didn’t even really start coming together until they decided that was the direction that they were going. As Whedon states:

“Then when we were talking about how to do it and how to pull it off the idea of it being the future was the one. As soon as we came up with that idea everybody kind of went ‘Oh I see what that story is,’ and we ran with that.”

With each season of ‘Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’ better than the last, I can only hope that another fun idea comes to them assuming ABC greenlights the series to continue.
