Tye Sheridan is on quite a roll. The young actor is appearing in two big budget would-be blockbusters this year. First, in just two weeks, he will headline Steven Spielberg’s ‘Ready Player One’ based on Ernest Cline’s bestselling pop culture-drenched novel. Then, this winter, he reprises the role of Scott Summers/Cyclops in ‘X-Men: Dark Phoenix’ which adapts one of the most famous comic book stories of all time. He popped up at SXSW, to promote ‘Ready Player One’ and A.J. Edwards’ indie crime drama ‘Friday’s Child’. While there, he spoke to The Wrap and offered a bit of a tease as to what to expect from his character.
“Jean goes crazy in the movie. Well, Cyclops doesn’t think she’s going crazy — Cyclops just thinks she’s gotta work some stuff out. It’s interesting, the drama in the movie. We treated this movie as much more of a drama versus a superhero film.”
Unfortunately, comic readers or fans of the ’90s cartoon series, or even anyone who saw ‘X-Men 3: The Last Stand’ kind of already knows that Jean “goes crazy” and that Cyclops stands by her. But at any rate you can watch the video below:
Even so, Chris Claremont, the writer of the original ‘Dark Phoenix Saga’ is keen on seeing how Simon Kinberg’s vision on the big screen, saying:
“After ‘X2’, I couldn’t wait for ‘X3’. I was figuring “Holy cow, Bryan [Singer] will do the ‘Phoenix Saga’ the way it should be done.” Well… guess again! Bryan didn’t do it. But the point is, cut ahead ten years, and Simon Kinberg is doing it, and Simon is doing it not only as a work of craft, but as a labor of love. This is something he wanted to do, and wants to do supremely well. And from everything I’ve seen and heard about the production, he’s going at it full bore. So it’s a matter of putting the right people in the right place at the right time with the right tools, and keeping your fingers crossed.”
It already sounds as though Kinberg’s take will be more comic accurate at the very least. What do you think? Are you excited to see ‘X-Men: Dark Phoenix’?
Directed by Simon Kinberg, ‘X-Men: Dark Phoenix’ starring Jessica Chastain, Michael Fassbender, Nicholas Hoult, Jennifer Lawrence, James McAvoy, Evan Peters, Tye Sheridan, Alexandra Shipp, Kodi Smit-McPhee and Sophie Turner opens on November 2, 2018.
