Created as one of the mightiest Marvel superheroes that everyone had forgotten, we’re now poised to have an ongoing series about ‘The Sentry.’ Bob Reynolds is a partial answer to Superman as he has the “power of one million exploding suns” though to balance this out, we were given a character who was also mentally ill. Only, when Bob gives into his dark side, it physically manifests as the creature known as The Void who has the purpose of tearing down and destroying everything The Sentry has tried to build up or save.
The new series is set to be penned by Jeff Lemire who has a ton of experience working with broken minds through writing ‘Moon Knight’ with art by Kim Jacinto (‘Avengers: No Surrender’).
When talking about what to expect from the new series, Lemire states:
“The Sentry is a fascinating character. I absolutely loved the original Sentry series by Paul Jenkins and Jae Lee when it first came out, so I jumped at the chance to write the character. The Sentry has a lot of emotional depth and a lot for me to dig into in terms of the psychology of the character. He is immensely powerful and has the potential to be one of the greatest and most important heroes in the Marvel Universe, but he is constantly undermined by his own dark side and his own self-doubt.”
As to who he will battle? The Void is currently still imprisoned. However:
“You cannot have The Sentry without the Void. But what I was very conscious of was not simply retelling the same stories that had been told in the past with Sentry and Void. I want to see their relationship, and their characters evolve and go in new directions.”
I’m not sure how we’ll see The Void escape from being in prison or what will happen once he does. With a new direction, we could see the villain fleshed out and possibly even become a developed character.
The Sentry has had a tough couple of years recently. He died at the closure of the “Siege” storyline when Norman Osborn convinces him to go up against The Avengers. Later, he was resurrected by the Apocalypse Twins as a new Horsemen of Death and when that ordeal came to an end, he took the corpse of the Celestial Executioner deep into space. We hadn’t heard much about him after that until recently when we found out that Doctor Strange had been helping him with The Void.
No word what happened to the abilities he was granted from being the Horsemen of Death though we know Daken still has the Celestial power in his system, so we’ll likely see this addressed at some point down the line.
We were also given one hint at the direction of the series as Jacinto says “drawing different realities are fun, and sometimes fun takes out the challenge.” It has been hinted that the Multiverse is currently in repair thanks to the guiding hand of Reed Richards.
