Pacific-Rim-Uprising-John-Boyega

The kaiju are rising again and humanity must fight back in ‘Pacific Rim Uprising’!  ‘Star Wars’ champ John Boyega takes center stage in this follow-up to Guillermo del Toro‘s 2013 cult favorite giant monsters versus mechas flick ‘Pacific Rim’.  Boyega plays Jake Pentecost, the son of Idris Elba’s character in the first.  He is joined by Scott Eastwood as Nate Lambert and Tian Jing as Liwen Shao, as well as vets from the first movie Charlie Day (as Dr. Newton Geiszler), Burn Gorman (Dr. Hermann Gottlieb) and Rinko Kikuchi (Mako Mori).  Mako Mori, one of the main Jaeger pilots in the first movie, will serve as a mentor to a new generation of fighters.

But the human cast aren’t really the draw here.  It’s, of course, humongous mechas bashing hideous monsters (with a lot of harmless CGI collateral damage) that really drew people to the first movie and the sequel promises even more.  It’s unclear how the kaiju find their way back to Earth after the heroes managed to seal the rift between the two worlds in the first movie, but once again, that’s really not that important.

Steven S. DeKnight (‘Daredevil’) steps in as director, with del Toro serving as executive producer.  DeKnight also worked on the script with T.S. Nowlin, Kira Snyder and Emily Carmichael.

The cast also includes Cailee Spaeny as Amara Namani, Adria Arjona as Jules Reyes, Zhang Jin as Marshal Quan, Karan Brar as Suresh, and Ivanna Sakhno as Vik.

The globe-spanning conflict between otherworldly monsters of mass destruction
and the human-piloted super-machines built to vanquish them was only a prelude
to the all-out assault on humanity in Pacific Rim Uprising.

John Boyega stars as the rebellious Jake Pentecost, a once-promising Jaeger pilot
whose legendary father gave his life to secure humanity’s victory against the
monstrous ‘Kaiju.’ Jake has since abandoned his training only to become caught up
in a criminal underworld. But when an even more unstoppable threat is unleashed
to tear through our cities and bring the world to its knees, he is given one last chance
to live up to his father’s legacy by his estranged sister, Mako Mori (Rinko Kikuchi) —
who is leading a brave new generation of pilots that have grown up in the shadow of
war. As they seek justice for the fallen, their only hope is to unite together in a global
uprising against the forces of extinction.

Jake is joined by gifted rival pilot Lambert and 15-year-old Jaeger hacker Amara, as the
heroes of the PPDC become the only family he has left. Rising up to become the most
powerful defense force to ever walk the earth, they will set course for a spectacular all-new
adventure on a towering scale.

‘Pacific Rim Uprising’ opens on March 23, 2018.
