MCU

Ever since the Walt Disney Company purchased the media assets of 20th Century Fox we’ve been waiting to hear when the ‘X-Men’ and ‘Fantastic Four’ might be able to team up with ‘The Avengers’. Sadly, it sounds like that wait could be even further off than many had hoped. While the deal with Sony to swing Spider-Man into the Marvel Cinematic Universe went like clockwork and we saw The Wallcrawler snag Cap’s shield in ‘Captain America: Civil War,’ things will take a little bit longer here.

To start with, the creative team hasn’t been briefed on anything and weren’t even aware that this deal was in the works according to Marvel Studios Visual Design Supervisor Andy Park:

“So I was at Stan Lee Comic Con last year… I got interviewed, and I got that exact same question. Like, ‘What is some of the characters you would dream of designing or working on? My answer was always the X-Men characters. And I’m like, ‘But it’s never gonna happen.’ But… we also used to say that about Spider-Man, so you never know, you know.

That’s probably as much as I can say, ’cause there’s nothing really to say yet. At least beyond, ‘Wow.”‘That whole Disney buying Fox deal is- none of us saw that coming, and we’re amazed and excited, because we always dreamed of having the X-Men and Fantastic Four in the MCU, but nothing’s actually been decided or announced. So, I have nothing to spill, ’cause I don’t even know what the future is. The only thing I’ve read … these thing are going to take at least 12 months to 18 months for something to even happen.”

That is 12-18 months before the government even approves the deal let alone working out stories to bring more of the characters into the MCU. With the recent success of ‘Deadpool‘ and ‘Logan‘, it would almost seem like the X-Men might still end up staying in their own world until another cosmic event could kick things off and bring these all together. The ‘Fantastic Four’ and the other cosmic menaces out there could be an entirely different story.

As for a timeline? There isn’t one at this time:

“If people are expecting to see them in one of our near upcoming films like they might be disappointed. I don’t know. I would love to see them, too, but I have no idea when they’re actually going to come out, but I’m excited for the future. I can’t wait to find out.”

We’re all excited and tying these characters together will easily be something that needs to be planned out over time. Thankfully, the studios have at least a year head start if they want to work it into upcoming scripts sooner than later.

Do you think that we’ll see the X-Men or Fantastic Four start to merge into the MCU in the next couple of years or will it likely be even further out than that? Share your thoughts below True Believers!
