To celebrate the return of the fifth season of Marvel’s ‘Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.,‘ it looks like the ex-director of the agency itself, Clark Gregg, will be directing the episode! That’s right folks; we’re celebrating ten years of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in a ton of fun ways all through 2018 and this Friday we’re going to see how Coulson would direct a movie! Or, an episode that pits Daisy against a certain Kree we’ve all been waiting to see get beat down on the small screen since she was introduced.

I’m sure it won’t be that easy, of course.

As to Gregg tackling double duties here is what he had to say about the experience:

“It’s a big episode with some big stuff, and they really went with my ideas. Coming from indie film, I’ve really done something that’s at the farthest end of different and still is the same concept. It was like doing a mini-Marvel movie. It’s that episode, as people will see, that’s a little bit like our version of Downton Abbey-meets-a very bloody, sci-fi version of Gladiator.”

From what it sounds like, Gregg takes his leadership a bit more openly than when he’s running an international spy agency. He’s more open to suggestions from fellow cast and crew and isn’t holding his cards so close to the vest. For example, as he was filming one of the scenes with Chloe Bennet she stated that Daisy would act a bit differently. Gregg excitedly said “Oh, that’s a really great point.” and was happy to adapt and not put his robotic fist down.

When Bennet chimed in on the fight scene, she stated:

“It’s a big fight for me, so it’s really fun to get to be directed by [Clark], Fights take so much time, so it’s just kind of fun being with [him] — he’s one of my best friends. So it’s fun just getting to work with one of my best friends in a [new] way.

He’s been adding this really great texture to certain scenes, and really funny beats, that I don’t think someone else would be able to.”

MARVEL’S AGENTS OF S.H.I.E.L.D. – “Orientation (Part One)” – Coulson and the team find themselves stranded on a mysterious ship in outer space, and that’s just the beginning of the nightmare to come, when “Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” returns for its highly anticipated fifth season with a special two-hour premiere, FRIDAY, DEC. 1 (8:00-10:01 p.m. EST), on The ABC Television Network.

It sounds like much of the cast and crew also have said that Gregg has helped the directors as the show has gone on. Interestingly enough, the actor has a past as an indie writer and director, and that is why he held back on behind the camera until now:

“I would watch the episodes [of SHIELD] be directed and I would go, ‘This is so different from anything I’ve done,’ The role of a director of a television show is very different than when you’re making an indie film and you wrote it, or you adapted it, and you are rewriting it on the fly and you’re the sole voice. You’re not trying to fit into an existing thematic style [or] visual style. It’s a very different beast.”

I’m super eager to see how Clark ends up showing off his directing chops on the small screen when the episode drops and ‘Agents of S.H.I.E.l.D.’ returns this Friday. As someone who has been intimately involved with the series since the beginning, it could be very interesting to see how his unique perspective guides his first outing behind the camera on the series.
