quantum leap

It turns out that we almost had another adventure with Dr. Sam Beckett! During a panel at this year’s L.A. Comic Con, series creator Donald Bellisario shared he had penned a movie script. Bellisario casually dropped this bomb but didn’t share if a film studio or television series had requested it or if this had been done for his own amusement.

When talking about the potential of a reboot, Bellisario said:

“I just finished writing a Quantum Leap feature. I don’t know what’s going to happen with it, but I did write it.”

No further details were shared on why he penned it, but one can only hope that someone with the means is pushing for a return for our favorite time traveler. As to what it could be about?

“I write things exactly the same way. I just start writing and I let them take me wherever it’s going to take me. I’m entertained the same way the audience is. So I just put Scott and Dean [Stockwell] in my head, kind of rebooted them, and went from there.”

This wasn’t too clear if he meant that it was a new take on the same characters or a complete departure from the series which ran from 1989 to 1993.

The finale of the show had Beckett still trapped traveling through time and unable to return home. However, the creator and main actor were okay with this ending and felt that it was the right way to go. In fact, Bakula took this moment to chime in and stated that:

“It was a great episode. Last episodes are always controversial. I always say to writers, ‘If you want a challenge more than writing just an hour of television, write an hour of television that is the last hour of television that that show will ever have on; write it so that it could also come back next fall; write it so that it could possibly become a movie of the week; [and] write it so that it could still potentially be a feature film someday. And make everybody happy… If you go back and watch that episode, [Bellisario] checked off all those boxes.”

With the open-ended nature of the finale that didn’t give us any real closure Bellisario surely did all of those things. In fact, the creator said that he “was proud of that episode. Everybody was.”

Now though we’ll just have to wait to see if this movie announcement actually ends up being turned into something or if it was just a writing exercise.

Would you welcome a return of ‘Quantum Leap’ with a film that could continue the story or bring it to a close? Should they leave it open ended if they did return or give us some kind of closure? Share your thoughts below!
