van helsing

Syfy is on a roll.  Just after announcing the renewal of ‘Z Nation’, the cable network has announced that it is picking up a third season of horror-themed ‘Van Helsing’, which will wrap its second on January 4th.  Production on Season Three is expected to begin in February 2018.

Kelly Overton stars as Vanessa Helsing who wakes up to discover the world has been overrun by vampires.  ‘Van Helsing’ is based on the graphic novel series ‘Helsing’ and is not connected to the 2004 Universal action movie starring Hugh Jackman and Kate Beckinsale.  Jonathan Scarfe, Christopher Heyerdahl, David Cubitt,Vincent Gale, Rukiya Bernard, Trezzo Mahoro, Laura Mennell and Paul Johansson also star.  Neil LaBute created the series and contributes as showrunner and writer.

LaBute reacted to the renewal news stating:

“I couldn’t be happier to learn that Syfy has renewed Van Helsing for a Season 3—it has been a wonderful journey thus far, but we have much more of the ‘Van Helsing’ saga to tell before we’re through.  It’s great to be working with Syfy on this project again, along with Chad and Mike at Nomadic and all the others at Dynamic and Echo Lake as well. The writing team has some amazing adventures planned for our cast and a few new surprises as well—expect blood to be spilled and characters to die screaming while the fate of humanity slips closer and closer to the edge of true chaos and utter darkness.”

Universal had plans to reboot their ‘Van Helsing’ as part of their Dark Universe film series, but that appears to have stalled.  So for the time being, Syfy’s series may be the only monster-fighting narrative along these lines.

Syfy recently cancelled several of their original shows, including ‘Blood Drive’, ‘Dark Matter’ and ‘Killjoys’, while it just premiered the surreal new series ‘Happy’ and has other ambitious projects in the works including George R.R. Martin’s ‘Nightflyers’, the Superman prequel ‘Krypton’, an update of ‘Tremors’ and an adaptation of the comic book ‘Deadly Class’.

Are you a fan of ‘Van Helsing’?  Are you excited that it is returning for another season?
