Ben Mendelsohn

SPOILER/RUMOR ALERT: The information contained in this article is strictly RUMOR at this point, although it seems highly likely.  If it turns out to be true, it could be considered a SPOILER so proceed with caution.

Director Orson Krennic terrorized one galaxy far, far away in ‘Rogue One: A Star Wars Story’, but now the actor that portrayed him, Ben Mendelsohn is about to do the same to a galaxy slightly closer– the Marvel Cinematic Universe.  A month ago, Mendelsohn was rumored to be in the running to play the main villain of 2019’s ‘Captain Marvel’.  Now it appears that this has been made official.  Not only that, but sources close to the film appear to have confirmed his role.

Mendelsohn appears to be playing the Kree spy Yon-Rogg, who, like his foe Captain Mar-Vell, first appeared in 1967’s ‘Marvel Super-Heroes’ #12.  Also, like Mar-Vell, Yon-Rogg was sent to spy on the Earth by the Kree Empire, but Yon-Rogg’s unrequited love for medic Una, whose heart belonged to Mar-Vell, drove him to attempt to kill or discredit Mar-Vell, alias Captain Marvel repeatedly.  During one such attempt, one of Yon-Rogg’s devices, the Psyche-Magnitron was damaged and Mar-Vell’s human ally, Carol Danvers, was exposed to its other-worldly energies, resulting in her gaining superpowers and becoming Ms. Marvel.  Long after Mar-Vell’s death, Carol adopted his title, Captain Marvel.

We know that Jude Law is portraying Mar-Vell in ‘Captain Marvel’ and since Yon-Rog is not only his rival/archenemy, but also the culprit behind Carol Danvers (Brie Larson) gaining her abilities, it makes sense that he would be the villain of the movie.  In addition, one of the Kree commanders that pulls Yon-Rogg’s strings is Ronan the Accuser, who appeared in live action in the first ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’, as played by Lee Pace, which would tie these two films together.

In addition to Larson and Law, Mendelsohn joins Samuel L. Jackson, reprising his role as Nick Fury.  Anna Bodenand Ryan Fleck are directing, based on a script by Geneva Robertson-Dworet.  Earlier versions of the screenplay were handled by Meg LeFauve and Nicole Perlman.

Are you intrigued to see how ‘Captain Marvel’ utilizes Yon-Rogg in the Marvel Cinematic Universe?  What do you think of Mendelsohn’s casting?

‘Captain Marvel’ invades the Marvel Universe on March 8, 2019.
