black adam suicide squad

Box office champion Dwayne Johnson was one of the earliest names that popped up in association with Warner Brothers’ DC Comics-based cinematic universe.  Johnson was announced as playing the villainous Black Adam in the movie ‘Shazam!’ but recently that plan changed.  Possibly due to the success of the villain-led ‘Suicide Squad’, Warner Brothers decided to give Black Adam his own movie rather than having him debut in ‘Shazam!’

But now comes word that the character will actually appear in a different movie first, just not ‘Shazam!’  In May, Johnson teased:

“We have a really cool surprise for Black Adam that I can’t reveal, in terms of where we will see Black Adam being introduced.”

It appears we may now know in which film that first appearance will come– ‘Suicide Squad 2’.  Reportedly, Adam will take on the Enchantress role, as the McGuffin that serves as the Squad’s target.

At this time, ‘Suicide Squad 2’ doesn’t have a release date, although it is slated in 2019 at some point.  It was expected to begin production in March 2018, but now it is said to have been pushed back to October.  Gavin O’Connor (‘The Accountant’) is signed to write and direct based on a treatment by Zak Penn.

It’s unclear which characters/actors will be back.  Harley Quinn/Margot Robbie was the breakout star and main attraction of the first film.  But she may have her plate full as she is reported to have two spin-offs in the works: ‘Gotham City Sirens’, which she will also executive produce, with David Ayer directing; and ‘Harley Quinn Vs. The Joker’ opposite Jared Leto, who is also said to appear in ‘Sirens’.  But without her, they shouldn’t even bother with another ‘Squad’.

Will Smith’s Deadshot, Leto’s Joker and Joel Kinnaman’s Rick Flag are expected to return as well.  Cara Delevigne’s Enchantress will NOT be in it and most likely neither will Jay Hernandez’s El Diablo.  No word on the others, yet.

‘Black Adam’ has only been announced and nothing more.  No writer or director has been announced and the film has neither a production start date nor a release date.

What do you think?  Would you like to see Dwayne Johnson premier as Black Adam in ‘Suicide Squad 2’ before his own solo movie?  Or should he get to shine solo in his first film outing?
