It’s no secret that the DC and Marvel movie worlds are in two very different places right now.  Fans of each will say that’s a perfectly okay thing, of course – but in the broader scope, it certainly does seem clear that DC is being very flexible with their “Extended Universe” plans in terms of which movies come out in what order – and even how these films might be completely eliminated or expanded as necessary.

This calendar year, DC will be releasing the ‘Wonder Woman’ solo film and the mega-team-up ‘Justice League,’ but beyond those two films, the company’s plans get a little murky.  Still officially on the schedule are ‘Aquaman’ and ‘The Batman’ – for now – but beyond that, DC has not committed to any other properties in a specific timetable.

On their docket, however, is definitely a Black Adam storyline, as super-bankable movie star Dwayne Johnson has signed on to play the character.  Initially, it appeared that Black Adam was going to feature in a shared origin film with his “nemesis” Shazam,   But in a recent interview with MTV, Johnson shed some light on recent discussions with the DC powers-that-be:

“We’ve had great discussions with Geoff Johns over there at DC. This is a really, really fun, cool time for DC right now because they’re really in a process of truly world building, and building out. We’re seeing that with Wonder Woman and Aquaman, and we have a few surprises down the line. So what we decided to do was actually create a scenario where Black Adam is having his standalone movie, Captain Marvel/Shazam will have his standalone movie, and then we’re building our world up that way and then we can come together at some other point.”

So, there you have it, folks: expect Black Adam and Shazam to feature heavily in the future of the DCEU.  Perhaps not the far-future, however – as Johnson teased in the same interview:

“We have a surprise for Black Adam coming up. I can’t tell you what it is, but it is gonna be… it’s gonna be fucking awesome.”

Will we be seeing our first hint of Black Adam in either ‘Wonder Woman’ or, more likely, ‘Justice League’ later this year?  Time will tell!

‘Wonder Woman’ hits American theaters on June 2, 2017, and ‘Justice League’ follows on November 17, 2017.
