One ring has the power to rule them all and it looks like Amazon may soon have it in its possession. Variety is reporting that Warner Bros is in preliminary stages to develop a TV series based on J.R.R. Tolkien‘s best selling series with Amazon.
Negotiations are still in the very early stages and no deal has been officially set but it’s been said that Warner Brothers Television, the counterpart of Warner Bros film studios who produced the feature films, has been shopping the series to various outlets and Amazon has emerged as the frontrunner. If Amazon does win the bid and a deal is made for ‘The Lord of the Rings’ TV series, this will mark a big coup for the streaming service who has recently decided to shift their original programming slate of naturalistic series and focus more on genre programming which seems to have a broader appeal both domestically and internationally. The fact that the company’s CEO Jeff Bezos is personally involved marks how important Amazon considers this project to be.
If a deal is made, don’t expect to see the series anytime soon. The project is so very early in the development stage that it doesn’t even have scripts or any writers lined up to write them.
No official statement on the deal has yet to be commented on by Amazon Studios or Warner Bros. Television.
More to come.
