Well, as much as we have tried to deny it, or hope otherwise, evidence is mounting that ‘Game of Thrones’ will not be coming back at any point in 2018. As many had feared, we will most likely have to wait until 2019 to see the final season of the epic series, and here’s the latest evidence lending support to that rumor. During a recent interview with TV Guide, one of the stars, Liam Cunningham (Sir Davos Seaworth), spoke about the shooting schedule for the latest season, as well as speaking briefly about how long each of the final episodes is going to be. According to Cunningham himself:
“[The episodes are] definitely going to be bigger and what I hear is longer. We’re filming right up until the summer. When you think about it, up until last season we’d have six months to do ten episodes, so we’re [doing] way more than that for six episodes. So that obviously will translate into longer episodes.”
If they are still filming up to summer 2018, there is little chance they will be able to get all of the post-production done in time to start releasing episodes in 2018, especially if these are indeed longer episodes (maybe we are looking at 90 minute episodes after all?) and since post will include a lot of special effects on Daenerys’s dragons and the dragon wight, all of which you know are going to factor heavily into the remaining episodes, they are going to need a lot of time to get those effects done. Plus, from a business standpoint, HBO is also already releasing ‘Westworld‘ Season 2 in the summer of 2018, and there is little reason for them to rush out the final season of ‘Game of Thrones’ when they already have a replacement show out that has a growing fan-base.
So there you have it, most likely ‘Game of Thrones’ Season 8 will not arrive until 2019, but on the bright side, HBO is giving the show time and resources to finish the best it can, and we are looking at extended episodes, so even with only 6, we could be getting a lot more content than we thought, and more screen time with the characters we love before it all ultimately comes to an end.
