RUMOR ALERT! Take these RUMORS with a grain of salt! Nothing is confirmed as of yet!
‘X-Men: Apocalypse’ featured one of the most cryptic post-credit stingers yet… unless you’re a big fan of the comic books. But after the fledgling X-Men infiltrate the Weapon X base and witness the rampage of Wolverine, the blood-splattered lab is taken over by operatives of the Essex Corporation. This was a reference to Nathaniel Essex, better known as Mister Sinister.
Now it looks like that tease will pay off but not in the next team movie, ‘X-Men: Dark Phoenix’ but in the eternally in-development ‘Gambit’ film. And producers are eyeing a pretty major actor to embody the mysterious mastermind.

THERE ARE “CONVERSATIONS” ABOUT LOCKING UP DANIEL CRAIG TO BE NATHANIEL ESSEX, A.K.A. MR. SINISTER IN GAMBIT AND ALSO IN OTHER X-MEN MOVIES.
007 as Sinister in not just ‘Gambit’ but other mutant films as well? That could be intriguing. Though Craig mainly plays heroes, his grizzled manner always gives him an edge, even when it comes to the usually debonair James Bond. It wouldn’t be a huge shift for him to play an outright villain… SHOULD this rumor be true and should these “conversations” actually lead to him signing on.
Though this is a rumor, the bit of credence given to it, is that Craig recently starred opposite Channing Tatum, who is still attached to ‘Gambit’ not just as the star but a producer as well. The pair starred in Steven Soderbergh’s comedic heist ‘Logan Lucky’.
Should Craig sign on, he could be the most famous actor to take on an X-role. And Craig is British as is Essex, so there’s that.
With or without Craig in the role, this seems to be the plot of the ‘Gambit’ movie:
“Gambit is hired to do a job in Paris in which he has to steal something from the Louvre Museum. His mysterious employer is revealed to be Nathaniel Essex a.k.a. Mr. Sinister. He offers Gambit 40 million to recover a mysterious trunk that was stolen by the Boudreaux clan. It will be auctioned off during the yearly Thieves Ball where all the criminal organizations in the world meet up. It uses New Orleans’ Mardi Gras celebrations as a cover. Gambit decides to enlist a crew of mutants to pull off this seemingly impossible heist…”
Though this plot is largely original, there are elements from the comics there. In the comics, Gambit was hired by Sinister to lead the Marauders to wipe out the Morlocks during the ‘Mutant Massacre’ storyline.
There are obviously still questions, such as what’s in this mysterious trunk, but we don’t need to know everything before the film even goes into production.
Beyond that, it makes sense to incorporate Mardi Gras in this New Orleans-set film. It could make for a colorful set piece, while
To be honest, with little else to go by, the Craig rumors sound a bit like the Jason Statham-as-Bullseye rumor that popped up a couple of years ago. It was rumored that Statham was in the running to play the assassin on ‘Daredevil’ Season Two but once word broke, Statham dropped out, partially because of the leak but also, reportedly because his agents tried to push for more money. That’s the story, anyway.
Once again, none of this is confirmed yet, so take it with a grain of salt for now.
