With ‘The Twilight Saga’ nearing its end in theaters, Hollywood is still trying to find a supernatural romance to take its place. First there was ‘Warm Bodies’, where a zombie falls in love with one of his potential victims. Now, it’s Southern Gothic ghosts with ‘Beautiful Creatures’.

The casting for ‘Beautiful Creatures’ has been coming in fast and furious. Already cast are Alice Englert, Jack O’Connell, Thomas Mann, Emma Thompson, Viola Davis, and Emmy Rossum. Now Academy Award-winning actor Jeremy Irons (‘Eragon’) has joined the cast.

‘Beautiful Creatures’ is based on the New York Times best selling young adult novel of the same name by Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl. The first in a series, ‘Beautiful Creatures’, set in the small town of Gatlin, South Carolina, tells the story of a young boy named Ethan (Jack O’Connell). Jack hates it in Gatlin and can’t wait to leave. That is, until a mysterious young girl named Lena (Alice Englert) moves to town. Ethan is shocked because Lena is the girl of his dreams… literally. In the weeks leading up to Lena’s arrival, Ethan had been having nightmares about the girl. When the two finally meet up, it sets off a series of events that begin to unravel some deeply buried secrets that the town doesn’t want uncovered.

Richard LaGravenese (‘The Fisher King’) wrote the adapted screenplay for ‘Beautiful Creatures’ and is set to direct. Jeremy Irons will be playing Lena’s uncle Macon Ravenwood. WB has the rights to the first three books in the ‘Beautiful’ series and, if the first is a success, hopes for this to become a new franchise.
