Syfy’s Superman prequel drama ‘Krypton’ is adding another DC Comics character to the mix, Earth native Adam Strange. In the comics, Strange is inadvertently teleported back and forth from Earth to the exotic planet Rann via a mysterious force called the Zeta Beam. In some comics, this Zeta Beam technology is used to create the Justice League’s teleportation devices. In most depictions, Adam Strange is the quintessential ’60s space man, with a jet pack, ray gun and even a fin on top of his helmet.
Strange will be played by Shaun Sipos. Sipos has a history of working in genre television, including on ‘The Vampire Diaries’ and ‘Dark Matter’. He is a cast member on the upcoming Starz series ‘Insomnia’ about contestants on a live or die reality competition. He has also appeared in various horror movies and thrillers like ‘Final Destination 2’, ‘The Grudge 2’, ‘Lost Boys: The Tribe’, ‘Texas Chainsaw 3D’, ‘The Remaining’ and ‘The Sandman’.
Sipos’ Strange is described as a “world-weary” man who becomes an unlikely mentor to Seg-El (Cameron Cuffe), the Kryptonian whose grandson will one day grow up to be Superman on Earth.
Reportedly, time travel will factor into this show. According to buzz, heroes and villains from the present will travel back to the past to muck around with Superman’s history. Could Adam Strange be the first of these? Hawkgirl is also planned to appear. It’s unclear if somehow this is the same Hawkgirl played by Ciara Renée on ‘Legends of Tomorrow’ or a new take. Either may– or may not– be time travelers.
Doomsday and Brainiac are also due to appear, but they are characters that are traditionally affiliated with Superman’s legend.
Here’s the show’s synopsis:
Syfy’s Krypton, the much-anticipated Superman prequel set two generations before the destruction of the legendary Man of Steel’s home planet, will follow Superman’s grandfather — whose House of El was ostracized and shamed — as he fights to redeem his family’s honor and save his beloved world from chaos.
Krypton will be executive produced by David S. Goyer (Man of Steel, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, The Dark Knight trilogy) through his Phantom Four banner. Damian Kindler (Sleepy Hollow) will serve as executive producer/showrunner, Colm McCarthy (She Who Brings Gifts, Peaky Blinders) is set to direct and co-executive produce the pilot. The pilot teleplay and story is written by David S. Goyer & Ian Goldberg (Once Upon a Time, Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles). Krypton will be produced by Warner Horizon Television and is based on characters created by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster, published by DC Comics.
Does Adam Strange’s presence on this show make you more intrigued? How do feel about time travelers from the present travelling back to Krypton’s past?
