It’s official, Hawk & Dove are joining Warner Brothers’ ‘Titans’ live action series, which will be available sometime next year on WB’s new DC Comics-based streaming service, along with ‘Young Justice’ Season Three. Hawk & Dove will be recurring characters, not regulars at first. Currently, there is the option that they may become regulars in Season Two or even spin-off into their own series.
As was rumored, Hawk will be portrayed by Alan Ritchson, whose most recent series, SyFy’s ‘Blood Drive’ was just cancelled after only one season. Previously, he starred on the series ‘Blue Mountain State’ and headlined the spin-off made-for-TV movie ‘Blue Mountain State: The Rise Of Thadland’ (which he also produced). He also provided the motion capture performance and voice for Raphael in the two most recent ‘Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles’ movies and had the role of Gloss in ‘The Hunger Games: Catching Fire’. But for DC Comic’s fans, he is best remembered for playing Aquaman/Arthur Curry in a recurring role on ‘Smallville’. He also provided the voice of Aquaman in the animated movie ‘Justice League: The New Frontier’.
In the comics, Hawk is really Hank Hall, the more aggressive, volatile half of the Hawk & Dove duo. He possesses super strength and endurance. The original Dove was his younger brother Don, who was killed in action to be replaced by Dawn Granger.
Speaking of, Dawn/Dove will be portrayed by Minka Kelly, most recently seen in the recurring role of Abbey Whitman on ‘Jane the Virgin’. She first gained notice on the series ‘Friday Night Lights’ and from there she went on to star in the series ‘Almost Human’, ‘Parenthood’ and the one-season reboot of ‘Charlie’s Angels’. She has appeared in several films as well including ‘(500) Days of Summer’ and ‘Lee Daniels’ The Butler’. (Prior to this announcement, Rebecca Rittenhouse was rumored to be the top choice for this role.)
After Don Hall’s death, Dawn Granger was granted his super gymnastics abilities. Unlike Don, Dawn also exhibited other physical enhancements like speed and strength, mental powers and in recent years has even been shown to be able to fly.
On ‘Titans’, in addition to being crime-fighting partners, this Hawk & Dove will also be romantically involved, which was not part of their original dynamic, as both had other partners. (This may have happened during the New 52, but at least in the beginning of that initiative, Dawn was involved with Deadman following their meeting and working together during the ‘Blackest Night’ event.)
‘Titans’ will center around Dick Grayson (Brenton Thwaites) as he grows into his own man and assembles a team of fellow crusaders, Raven (Teagan Croft), Starfire (Anna Diop) and Beast-Boy.
How does ‘Titans’ seem to be shaping up to you? Does this cast impress you so far?
