It is starting to sound like much of Cable’s past is going to be omitted from ‘Deadpool 2‘. This actually isn’t too surprising as writer Paul Wernick had previously stated that “I think we’re going to distill him down to his essence. It will be authentic and faithful, but it’s not going to include the 18,000 details. If you were going to read a Wikipedia page about Cable, you’d roll your eyes.” Honestly, Cable’s past with cloning, time travel, is the son of Scott Summers and Jean Grey transported to the future and present, and so much else would give casual viewers a migraine.

This is probably a good call on their part.

In a recent interview, director David Leitch is kind of doubling down on that view of streamlining Cable’s origin, or at least what we’re shown in ‘Deadpool 2’ and holding off the rest for a later date:

“Look, I think besides all of the Deadpool, sort of the film universe Deadpool, you kind of have to be selective of like how you approach these characters because there’s a canon of work that’s so massive that you could never put it all on screen. So we’ve been really particular what we’re going to put in and what we’re going to leave for potential future if it goes that way and, uh, I think you’ll like it. It’s all in the spirit of canon, and also in the spirit of like what Deadpool the movie is.”

If things are being done “in the spirit of like what Deadpool the movie is,” you can almost see Wade Wilson breaking the fourth wall and giving us a super streamlined version which hits the high points before giving up and telling viewers to just check the Wiki page. Leitch also stated that:

“We’ve been really particular what we’re going to put in and what we’re going to leave for potential future.”

So with that in mind, I suspect we’ll have an initial set of details which will be fleshed out in ‘X-Force’, a potential future Cable movie, and likely ‘Deadpool 3’ where we will probably see Josh Brolin reprising the role again.

Are you annoyed that we won’t be getting more of Cable’s past or will this be the right way to introduce him to audiences? Will Wade break the fourth wall in ‘Deadpool 2’ to explain more about our time traveling hero? Share your thoughts below True Believers!
