In an unexpected turn, the producers of HBO’s ‘Westworld’ brought a surprise with them to San Diego Comic Con. If you read the headline (and of course you did), you already know that the surprise was the first trailer for the show’s second season. After all, while the show has recently begun filming its upcoming season, I can’t imagine anyone expected them to have already prepared a trailer, especially given the show’s nebulous 2018 return date.
Based on the cult classic film of the same name, ‘Westworld’ takes place in the eponymous theme park. The series’ first season was one of 2016’s most watched shows, and with good reason. In many ways, that season was equal parts puzzle and prelude to the series’ larger mythos, as the Hosts – the androids that staff the park – begin to achieve a form of sentience and turn against the guests of Westworld.
That’s all well and good, but where do we go from here? Well, as the show prepares to move into its second year, the Comic Con trailer teases the continuation of several current existing storylines while planting the seeds of new mysteries. But while there may be a fair bit of uncertainty regarding where the plot goes from here, there is one thing the trailer makes crystal clear: This is going to be a bloody affair.
The trailer itself runs about two minutes and is available here:
‘Westworld’ will return to HBO in 2018. The series’ cast includes Evan Rachel Wood, Jeffrey Wright, James Marsden, Thandie Newton, Luke Hemsworth, and Ed Harris.
