Back in 2000 ‘FLCL’ was released and was the last anime series that I truly fell in love with so to see the second and third season trailer released has me excited. The 6-episode run wasn’t long enough, but now Adult Swim has confirmed that a second and third season both with 6-episodes is due to debut in 2018. Production I.G. had a surprise smash hit on their hands, and after 18 long years, we’re going to finally see how the story played out.

The animation style and music will bring not only excitement for the future but nostalgia for how it all started.

Senior vice president/creative director, Adult Swim On-Air Jason DeMarco stated that:

“The original FLCL is an anime classic and has been a fixture on Adult Swim since we first laid eyes on it. I’m beyond thrilled to be able to produce a sequel with the original creators, for Toonami, where it belongs.

Synopsis:

“In the new season of FLCL, many years have passed since Naota and Haruhara Haruko shared their adventure together. Meanwhile, the war between the two entities known as Medical Mechanica and Fraternity rages across the galaxy. Enter Hidomi, a young teenaged girl who believes there is nothing amazing to expect from her average life, until one day when a new teacher named Haruko arrives at her school. Soon enough, Medical Mechanica is attacking her town and Hidomi discovers a secret within her that could save everyone, a secret that only Haruko can unlock.

But why did Haruko return to Earth? What happened to her Rickenbacker 4001 she left with Naota? And where did the human-type robot ‘Canti’ go?”

Co-founder, president, and CEO of Production I.G Mitsuhisa Ishikawa added in that:

“FLCL has become an anime classic over the years, yet it has remained vibrant. This new season will capture the hearts of both longtime FLCL fans from around the world and new anime viewers.”

I couldn’t agree more as excitement is an understatement as to how I feel about this news! I suspect any other fans who have enjoyed this surreal series are going to feel the same way. The original series creator Kazuya Tsurumaki is back as the supervisor for the series with “director Katsuyuki Motohiro (Psycho-Pass) and character designer Yoshiyuki Sadamoto (Neon Genesis Evangelion).” Hideto Iwai (Last Dinner) has joined as a writer for the series.

This is probably the best news I’ve read in the past couple of weeks and the first major series I’m looking forward to for next year. I’m not sure I’m thrilled that it won’t take long to watch or sad that it’ll be over so quickly.
