doctor who

‘Doctor Who’ is barreling towards the conclusion of this season – Peter Capaldi’s last, sadly – with only three episodes left to go (plus the Christmas Special later this year, of course).  This weekend’s episode, ‘The Eaters of Light,’ is another “standalone” in plot, but in two weeks, we begin the two-part season-ending episode – and the newly-release synopsis hints at some very dark moments for our favorite Time Lord.

The first installment of the two-part episode is entitled ‘World Enough and Time,’ and the episode synopsis seems to indicate, in no uncertain terms, that someone’s life will be coming to an end:

Friendship drives the Doctor into the rashest decision of his life. Trapped on a giant spaceship, caught in the event horizon of a black hole, he witnesses the death of someone he is pledged to protect. Is there any way he can redeem his mistake? Are events already out of control? For once, time is the Time Lord’s enemy.

The biggest question here, obviously, is that of whom is going to die?  “Someone he is pledged to protect” would immediately make one think of Bill, Nardole, or Missy – but it may not be that simple.  Steven Moffat (who, as you likely already know, is also leaving the show at the conclusion of the current season) loves a good misdirect, so it’s possible that we’ll be meeting a brand-new character in either this week’s or next week’s episode that ends up being the person that dies.

As is always the case with ‘Doctor Who,’ time will tell – and as always here at ScienceFiction.com, we’ll have a weekly review and breakdown of each new episode for you to enjoy!

‘Doctor Who’ airs on Saturday nights in the US on BBC America.
