star-wars-the-classic-newspaper-comicsFresh after the news of IDW Publishing set to bring us the original kid-friendly ‘Star Wars Adventures‘ we’re learning that they will also be giving us the first volume of the ‘Star Wars: The Classic Newspaper Comics’! To bring this classic daily newspaper strip back into our hands, we’re seeing IDW team with “the multi award-winning imprint, Library of American Comics.”

This first run will consist of a whopping “575 sequential strips from its premiere run March 11, 1979, to October 5, 1980.” Also added in are the Sunday “title header and “bonus” panels” which have been restored to glorious full color. Not only is this collection something that is a fun bonus for fans but the first time that the run has ever been released in its entirety in order.

These comics were released over five years, and the announcement included that there will be a total of three volumes to look forward to and fans of the “Legends” of Star Wars will be thrilled to get their hands on them all! The comics not only included the classic characters as all know and loved but original characters and worlds not seen in the films.

While the initial tales told separate stories, it wasn’t long until writer Russ Manning took the adventures to deliver seven-days-a-week shorts.

According to IDW Publishing’s President and COO Greg Goldstein:

Some of these strips have been reprinted in other formats, but, like many of our other LOAC collections, this is the first fully complete, chronological collection of the strips as they originally appeared when they graced the morning papers nearly 40 years ago.

As I’ve read snippets of these stories here and there the thought of being able to actually read them all is an exciting prospect.
