Netflix’s next Marvel series ‘Iron Fist’ is set to drop this Friday but fans of the character shouldn’t expect a flashback showdown between Shou-Lao and our leading actor while they’re binge watching the first season. Danny Rand will be joining his future fellow ‘Defenders’ on the streaming service this month and while we’ve seen origin stories for ‘Daredevil,’ ‘Jessica Jones’ and ‘Luke Cage,’ the dragon which goes hand in hand with our martial artist just wasn’t in the budget.
For those unfamiliar with Iron Fist’s history, after years of training in K’un-Lun, his final test was to defeat the immortal dragon known as Shou-Lao. To do so, one must pierce the Dragon’s hide and heart with their fist.
This is clearly no easy task, and we won’t be able to see how he does it quite yet.
When asked about the dragon, actor Finn Jones stated:
“I’d love to have the budget for these shows to have a full-on Game of Thrones style dragon…But unfortunately, you know, we have budget restraints. That’s the nature of the show.”
While we won’t see it on screen, it sounds like we do hear about how Danny earned his powers:
“We do allude to it in Iron Fist, in a very intelligent way…And definitely in The Defenders… but I think, you know, we’ve got to be realistic.”
My only concern on us ever seeing the dragon or this fight is that if they are going “to be realistic” this might be something we never do get to see on the small screen. Between the lack of his original costume in the first season to not showing his origin, it is unclear what may have changed for the character and if those early negative reviews that have been popping up will be how audiences feel when they watch it.
I, for one, have high hopes for the show and hope that Netflix doesn’t destroy them with a subpar martial arts series.
