thanos and the guantlet

With all of the ‘Doctor Strange’ special features hitting the internet recently, you knew there was bound to be some news about the highly anticipated ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ hidden within all of the new information, especially as we are barreling toward that iconic movie that we have been waiting for so long for Marvel to release. Fortunately, during one of the special features, there is a part when one of the writers speaks about Thanos and his goals in the upcoming epic, and while somewhat vague, there are some hints drops about the villain’s motivations that we had not heard before.  According to ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ co-writer Stephen McFeely:

“His goal is to re-balance the universe as he sees it. So when he figures out that the Infinity Stones could do this for him at the snap of a finger, that becomes his main goal.”

Of course, “re-balance the universe” sounds like a colorful way of talking about killing a lot of people, which would fit with what we know from the comics where Thanos wants to court the manifestation of death which is a woman, a character that he loves and wants to impress with the devastation he can wreak with the Infinity Stones, but it could mean other things as well. A lot of speculation has been going on that McFeely and Marvel have still not confirmed whether or not the character of Death will be a thing in the MCU, or whether Thanos’ motivation for the getting the stones will be something else entirely, which would be a marked change from the comics. Perhaps they think a female manifestation of death would be too odd in the MCU? Or maybe they have something better in mind? Who knows, but this idea of re-balancing the universe does have possibilities, especially if they are hinting at the fact that with the Avengers, and the Guardians out there Thanos sees too many heroes and sources of goodness. It would be interesting to see him use the Stones to bring back a lot of MCU villains, or maybe kill off some heroes (maybe ones who’s contracts are expiring soon…). You never know, the possibilities at this point are limitless but very exciting.
