cloak-and-dagger

Rumor and reports are just that, rumors and reports. Less than a week after it was “reported” that Freeform had found its ‘Clock & Dagger’ for the TV series based on the Marvel Comics characters, that report has been debunked.  It was previously stated that ‘Heroes’ alum Noah Gray-Cabey had been selected to play Cloak opposite former Disney star Debby Ryan as Dagger.

But now comes the official announcement that the role of Cloak a.k.a. Tyrone Johnson has actually gone to Aubey Joseph, with Olivia Holt taking the role of Dagger a.k.a. Tandy Bowen”

Showrunner/Executive Producer Joe Pokaski declared:

“The characters of Tandy and Tyrone have always stood out to me ever since I first met them in the pages of Marvel comics when I was a boy. When Olivia and Aubrey read for the roles, these characters leapt off the page. We’re so excited to see what these talented young actors bring to the Marvel Universe.”

The Head of Marvel Television, Jeph Loeb, who is also serving as EP added:

“Marvel is delighted to have found our Cloak and Dagger. Olivia Holt and Aubrey Joseph encompass the true essence of the characters and we are excited for the audience to see them in these roles.”

Joseph is a relative newcomer, having appeared on the big screen in the Liam Neeson action flick ‘Run All Night’ and the John Turturro-directed ‘Fading Gigolo’ which featured an all-star cast that included Woody Allen, Liev Schreiber, Sharon Stone and Sophia Vergara.  He also appeared in the TV movie ‘Death Pact’ and has had roles on ‘Law & Order: SVU’ and HBO’s ‘The Night Of’.

While Disney star Debby Ryan didn’t get the role of Dagger, another Disney star did– Olivia Holt, who has starred on the shows ‘Kickin’ It’ and ‘I Didn’t Do It’.  She has also popped up on other Disney series like ‘Shake It Up!’ and ‘Dog With A Blog’.  Holt has had one prior Marvel-based role, providing the voice for Petra Parker/Spider-Girl on ‘Ultimate Spider-Man’.

The pilot episode of ‘Cloak & Dagger’ will be directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood.

This exciting new series is an adaptation of the beloved Marvel characters aimed squarely at young adults. This live-action interracial romance follows Tandy Bowen and Tyrone Johnson, two teenagers from very different backgrounds, who find themselves burdened and awakened to newly acquired superpowers while falling in love. Tandy can emit light daggers and Tyrone has the ability to engulf others in darkness. They quickly learn they are better together than apart—but their feelings for each other make their already complicated world even more challenging.

Tyrone is described as a boy who yearned to be fearless, but due to tragedies in his life has learned to fear.  Tandy is from an affluent background who was helpless to stop her family from being wiped out by a storm.

No specific release date has been announced, but ‘Cloak & Dagger’ is expected to arrive sometime in 2018.
