It’s official!  Miles Morales is swinging onto the big screen in the animated ‘Spider-Man’ flick from Sony.  After the poorly-received ‘Amazing Spider-Man’ films, Sony has partnered with Marvel Studios to relaunch the franchise with the upcoming Jon Watts-directed ‘Spider-Man: Homecoming’ but the studio has always had an eye on expanding the brand.  After scrapping plans for spin-off movies starring the Sinister Six and Venom, it looks as though Sony is changing things up and beyond ‘Homecoming’, they are looking to expand by using the OTHER Spidey, Miles Morales.

Miles originated in the ‘Ultimate’ Universe in the comics but was so popular that he was imported to the mainstream (616) Marvel Universe, where he joined the Avengers and is now part of the teen team ‘The Champions’.  Miles made headlines for being a biracial character (half black, half Mexican) that took up one of the most iconic roles in all of comics.  He has previously appeared in animated form on ‘Ultimate Spider-Man’ voiced by Donald Glover, who has an undisclosed role in ‘Spider-Man: Homecoming’.

The animated ‘Spider-Man’ movie will be directed by Bob Persichetti who previously worked on ‘Puss In Boots’, ‘The Little Prince’, ‘Mulan’, ‘Tarzan’ and ‘Hercules’ among others and Peter Ramsey (‘Rise of the Guardians’, ‘Monsters Vs. Aliens: Mutant Pumpkins From Outer Space’).  The script is by ‘The Lego Movie”s Phil Lord, who will also executive produce with his partner Chris Miller.  Both Lord and Miller are slated to direct the ‘Han Solo’ ‘Star Wars’ anthology film.

Lord and Miller made the following statement regarding the project:

“What inspired us the most is that anyone can wear the mask. You can be any race creed or color.”

The animated ‘Spider-Man’ movie will be released on December 21, 2018.  It appears that Disney is planning to release the ‘Han Solo’ movie in May, breaking with their holiday release schedule, so Lord and Miller’s two films won’t conflict.

Are you excited to see Miles Morales swing solo in his own film?
