While Bryan Fuller hadn’t been able to get ‘Hannibal‘ to the ‘Silence of the Lambs’ story arc that everyone wanted, we’ve all known that it could return down the line and now actor Hugh Dancy says when that could happen. That sounds like great news! The downside is that I wouldn’t hold my breath on seeing it anytime in the near future as it looks like we could have a four to five-year wait for the fourth season. So while that is sad news, he does say that he believes “that everyone is willing” so if the stars align we might still be in luck to have the rest of the tale told.
In actuality the change in time could work for the storytelling:
“My feeling is that, knock on wood, if it came around again, it wouldn’t be a bad thing for it to be four or five years later. That might actually be kind of interesting. How weird would that be, on a personal level, to find yourself back with those people? ‘So… where did we leave off?’
It’s such a strange idea, but it’s potentially very healthy for a story like that. So we’ll see.”
It does make you wonder where Hannibal and Will would be a few years down the line and what events would occur to have Lecter being caught again so he would eventually be able to meet Clarice Starling and what role Graham could have as he was only mentioned in passing in ‘Silence of the Lambs.’ Of course, the show has taken liberties with the source material in the past so finding a way to fit him in wouldn’t be that much of a stretch. As Dancy has stated, Fuller has “envisioned taking some elements of that novel and reworking it through the Will-Hannibal relationship… I think it would be more through the filter of Bryan.”
The third season ended with a jumping off point that could fully put the show in the direction of the novel:
“I know where we stood at the end of Season 3, in terms of what he was thinking about and it did reflect some elements of Silence of the Lambs… He loves that source material, as he would tell you.”
I would love to see a take on ‘Silence of the Lambs’ done with more Will Graham and how his relationship with Hannibal could play into things while Starling also ends up taking so much of the cannibal’s attention.
Do you hope that a fourth season of ‘Hannibal’ will come to fruition? Share your thoughts below my fellow Fannibals!
