Ewan McGregor Is Finally Free To Share His Thoughts On His New Disney+ Obi-Wan Series

Disney has been doing all they can to entice people to their new streaming service, Disney+.  Among those attempts was their announcement of a new Star Wars series about Obi-Wan Kenobi, in which Ewan McGregor reprises the titular role.  However excited we residents of Geekville may be about the new show, it turns out that McGregor is just as happy about it and being able to finally talk about his role.  In a recent interview, he described his feelings:

“It’s a fucking massive relief.  Because for four years, I’ve been having to lie to people about it.”

He also disclosed where the series falls in the Star Wars canonical timeline:

“The storyline sits between Episode III and Episode IV.”

To save you from counting on your fingers, that’s between ‘Revenge of the Sith‘ and ‘A New Hope.‘  It makes sense for them to choose this era.  Obi-Wan had just seen the fall of the Jedi Order, dispersed Anakin’s twins, and gone into hiding with Luke on Tatooine.  While the films don’t give an exact number of years between the two movies, based on Luke’s apparent age in ‘A New Hope,” we can guess it’s around 20 years or so.  This is plenty of time for a multi-season show to go just about as long as the ratings stay up.

McGregor added his own thoughts on the issue:

“The Jedi Order was falling apart. It will be interesting to take a character we know in a way and show him—Well, his arc will be quite interesting, I think, dealing with that the fact that all the Jedi were slaughtered with the end of Episode III. It’s quite something to get over.”

He also noted that he’s using the series as an opportunity to show how his Obi-Wan turned into the version played by Alec Guinness in ‘A New Hope.’  He explained:

“I feel like I’m grayer and nearer him in age, so it’ll be easier to do that.”

Here’s hoping that it turns out to be as good as McGregor is teasing us that it will be!
