The upcoming “romantic sci-fi thriller” ‘Passengers’ is increasingly inviting the description of “‘Titanic’ in space”, and not in a bad way. As the film’s release date approaches, the marketing has taken on an almost bipolar tone as it balances an emphasis on the romantic plot that will undoubtedly serve as the heart of the narrative with the an emphasis on the creative effects sequences driven by the vessel’s myriad malfunctions, which is set to provide much of the movie’s spectacle.
With the film’s most recent trailer opting to favor visual spectacle then, it’s only natural that the latest set of promotional clips would lean in the opposite direction. And with that in mind, it’s hardly surprising that the pair of clips released today have clearly made a point of contrasting with the “disaster movie” tone of the recent trailer, with one offering a playful tone and almost entirely eschewing visual effects and the other giving us a glimpse of Jim and Aurora’s first date.

From the film’s official summary:
On a routine journey through space to a new home, two passengers, sleeping in suspended animation, are awakened 90 years too early when their ship malfunctions. As Jim (Chris Pratt) and Aurora (Jennifer Lawrence) face living the rest of their lives on board, with every luxury they could ever ask for, they begin to fall for each other, unable to deny their intense attraction… until they discover the ship is in grave danger. With the lives of 5000 sleeping passengers at stake, only Jim and Aurora can save them all.
