Even though SyFy has been releasing top quality science fiction television in recent years they are still trying to shed the B-Movie films and shows that they had become known for so it should be no surprise that they are ordering 3 new potential pilots. With shows like ‘Dark Matter’, ‘The Expanse‘, and ‘Killjoys‘ as just a sample of the quality that they’ve been delivering I can’t help but be excited to see what we’ll be getting from the pilots for ‘The Machine’, ‘Haunted’, and ‘Happy!’. Honestly, they all sound as if they could be potential must watches.
First up in ‘The Machine’ we’re seeing a reboot of the 2013 film done as a series. While I hate reboots in general, I can’t help but love what the network has been doing with ’12 Monkeys’ so to tackle the movie could be quite interesting. The series is set to be produced and written by Caradog James who wrote the original film and in it, we’re getting a fun take on artificial intelligence. It will explore the conflict between man and what we’ve created through the lives of six characters. Each of these characters has a piece to the puzzle on if humanity will survive or be destroyed by the new life which it has created.
Next up is ‘Haunted’ which is a new supernatural horror-drama. While much of Syfy’s previous horror has been on the campy side with shows coming up like ‘Channel Zero’ it looks like that is set to change. While it is hard to tell which camp this series will fall into it does follow “four siblings who reunite following their parents’ deaths” who are trying to overcome both their own dysfunctional family relationships and face actual ghosts from their pasts in order to survive. This series is being produced by James Frey with Noga Landau joining him and writing the pilot.
Finally, we have Grant Morrison and Brian Taylor set to executive produce ‘Happy!’ based off of the graphic novel which they had released in 2013. It is described as: “Meet Nick Sax, a corrupt, intoxicated ex-cop turned hit-man, adrift in a stinking twilight world of casual murder, soulless sex, eczema, and betrayal. With a hit gone wrong, a bullet in his side, the cops and the mob on his tail, and a monstrous child killer in a Santa suit on the loose, Nick and his world will be changed forever this Christmas — by a tiny blue horse called Happy!” Having read it, I can honestly say this would make a great series though I’m not sure if SyFy would have been my first choice of a network for it as FX or HBO might have been a better fit.
With their recent success though I’m more than willing to give them the benefit of the doubt if the greenlight the series.
We have three vastly different shows to look forward to and in them some potential great additions to their current lineup that wouldn’t steal the thunder of their ongoing series’.
