While one could make a case that the ‘The Toxic Avenger‘ film was bad to deserve a remake enough even with a cult following it still gives me no pleasure in saying that Hollywood is rebooting yet another franchise. In this one, Conrad Vernon (‘Sausage Party’,’Monsters vs Aliens’) is set to direct the new take on Troma’s classic film. In the original film by Lloyd Kaufman, ‘The Toxic Avenger’ had a high school student get tossed into a vat of toxic waste by a chemical company and just like ‘Daredevil’ and the ‘Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles’ it gave him super powers. Only the toxic portion gives him quite the gnarly look on top of his amazing new strength.
A reboot has been in the works for this franchise for quite some time and in 2013 we had heard that Steve Pink was going to helm a version that brought Arnold Schwarzenegger on board to play “The Exterminator” who was only there to train the Toxic Avenger on learning his new powers. Obviously, this didn’t go anywhere.
According to Vernon:
“The opportunity to re-imagine a favorite cult-classic from my high school years is an honor. Toxie is an underground icon. My favorite kind!’
While Executive Producer Richard Saperstein added that:
“Conrad Vernon is a subversive comedic genius. He is the perfect director to bring this iconoclastic franchise back to life.”
The idea for this film is set to be “…more grounded and mainstream” so audiences won’t quite have to be used to the off the wall humor that Troma is known for. At this time Archer’s writers Mike Arnold and Chris Poole are re-writing the script for the film.
While a wild concept, the original film spawned 3 sequels, a musical, and animated television series called ‘Toxic Crusaders’.
Are you looking forward to a return of ‘The Toxic Avenger’? Do you feel that one of the creators of ‘Sausage Party’ will bring the film to new levels of raunchiness or be successful at making it “grounded and mainstream”? Share your thoughts below!
