star trek: discovery

While we’re all excited for the release of Bryan Fuller’s ‘Star Trek: Discovery‘ which is coming to CBS All Access subscription, we haven’t known the full reason why it was set prior to the time period of ‘Star Trek: The Original Series’ until now. Writer Nicholas Meyer has opened up a bit on why they choose the time frame of being pre-Kirk. As the director of ‘Star Trek: Wrath of Khan’, we know that Meyer is already well-versed in the Trek Universe so it was interesting to hear why this time frame would be a key to the show’s creation.

At the Mission: New York Star Trek convention Meyer stated that:

“It was about finding a space in the chronology to maneuver and create stuff. Bryan didn’t want to use the same characters from other series, and a 10-year pre-Kirk thing seemed perfect.”

The fun part though is that this will also give us an actual view of a major event which had been referenced in the original series but never shown on screen.

Previously Executive Producer Brannon Braga had stated that going too far into the future might have issues with “plausible technology and design.” So while many of us would love to see what happened after the fallout of the final events in ‘Star Trek: The Next Generation’, ‘Star Trek: Deep Space Nine’, and ‘Star Trek: Voyager’ it seems like that world is still cut off outside of the works of fiction that were released in companion novel and comic form.

Are you looking forward to boldly going on new adventures with ‘Star Trek: Discovery’? Do you hope that we’ll get another season of the show that will be set in the future if each season tells a unique story? Share your thoughts below!
