Fans of ‘Star Wars’ have some relatively interesting news this week due to some information revealed during ‘The Star Wars Show‘ about the upcoming ‘Rogue One’ film. On the show, they gave us our first look at C2-B5, a new droid premiering during this December’s film, who basically looks like an all-black version of the classic ‘Star Wars’ droid R2-D2. No one is quite clear what role C2-B5 is going to have in the film at this point, but there are a lot of theories floating around.
So far all we know is that at one point he definitely served the Empire, though we are unsure just where his allegiances lie during the course of ‘Rogue One.’ He could be a droid rescues by the Rebels and converted to their side, or he could just be one of many maintenance droid roaming the halls of Director Krennic’s (Ben Mendelsohn) Star Destroyer. Another theory has C2-B5 as the personal astromech droid of Galen Erso (Mads Mikkelson), father to Jyn Erso and the man wanted by both the Empire and the Rebels for his access to the plan for the Death Star.
My own personal theory is that C2-B5 looking just like R2-D2 is no coincidence. If ‘Rogue One‘ is supposed to the story of how a group of Rebels stole the plans for the Death Star, it would make sense if the filmmakers borrowed a plot device from ‘A New Hope’ and had a droid (one that happened to look just like R2-D2) carry those stolen plans, and potentially be an essential part of the plot as he tries to escape from either the Rebels or the Empire, depending on who he answers to. It would be a nice bridge to the idea that R2-D2 would later be called upon to carry those plans, as maybe that particular model of droid is ideally suited for carrying top secret information like that.
Do you have a theory for what part C2-B5 might play in ‘Rogue One?’ Do any of these theories make sense to you?
