Russia is getting their own live action super heroes in the film ‘Guardians’ directed by American filmmaker Sarik Andreasyan and introduces a Cold War-era team of Soviet heroes to answer to American teams like ‘The Fantastic Four’ and ‘The Avengers’.
The team debuted in a new trailer which just arrived this week. Now keep in mind, even with an American director, this is still a Russian movie so for one thing, the dubbing is pretty wonky. And the budget is dwarfed by similar US super films– $330 million Rubles, which translates to roughly $20M in US dollars. So the effects are a bit more ‘Sharknado’ than ‘Avengers’. So this could wind up being a kitschy campfest… or it may surprise viewers with a fresh spin on super heroes, not inspired by established comic books.
As far as I can tell, the characters names haven’t been revealed in English, but we do know the actors names. Sebastien Sisak plays a character able to manipulate rock and stone. (He might also turn into stone from the look of things.) Alina Lanina can turn into water. Sanzhar Mardiev can teleport and carries two energy scythes. But obviously the best of all is Anton Pampushnyy who plays a hulking machine gun-toting half-man, half-bear!
The heroes are given their powers by a government organization called Patriot during the Cold War but the heroes must reassemble years later for a new mission.
You can check out the trailer below:
The film will be released in Russia on February 17, 2017 and sometime shortly after that in China and it is expected to get a US theatrical release after that. It wouldn’t be surprising if the film’s title was altered in the US to avoid confusion with Marvel’s ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’… unless that’s deliberate.
If you are familiar with Marvel Comics, ‘The Guardians’ bears (no pun intended) a resemblance to the Soviet Super Soldiers, essentially a Soviet version of the Avengers, which includes Vanguard a hero who carried a hammer and sickle which manipulated energy and Ursa Major, a large bear man, who clearly resemble the heroes in this movie. (The other members were Darkstar, who manipulated darkness and was romantically involved with Ice Man at one point, Iron Man villains Titanium Man and Crimson Dynamo and Red Guardian, basically their answer to Captain America.)
