One big tease from ‘Batman V Superman’ was the battered Robin costume on display in the Bat Cave.  Fans expected that to play a bigger part in ‘Suicide Squad’ but it was largely glossed over.  So what’s the story?

In the comics, The Joker beat the second Robin, Jason Todd, to death with a crowbar before blowing up his remains.  Did the story play out the same way in the movie universe?

‘Suicide Squad’ director David Ayer comes right out with what he believes happened:

The Joker Suicide Squad tattoos“This is sort of my personal thing and maybe less about a larger connection.  But Joker killed Robin and Batman basically smashes his teeth out and locks him up in Arkham Asylum. It’s in the asylum where Joker would have done the ‘damaged’ tattoo as a message to Batman saying, ‘You’ve damaged me. I was so beautiful before and now you’ve destroyed my face.’ That’s where the grill comes from.”

In case you missed it, when Harley Quinn first pops up, the screen displays “Accomplice to the murder of Robin,”  indicating that she also played a hand in the murder.

Will the upcoming solo ‘Batman’ movie delve further into this tale?  That remains to be seen, but keep in mind, Ben Affleck and Geoff Johns are working on that movie on their own, with no input from Ayer or ‘BvS’ helmer Zack Snyder.  So any seeds they may have planted could very well be ignored or altered heavily.

What do you think?  Does Ayer’s explanation satisfy you?  Or would you still like to see more of this backstory in an upcoming movie?
