With ‘Star Trek Beyond’ kicking off its theatrical run with a special premiere at San Diego Comic-Con this week, fans are very excited to board the U.S.S. Enterprise for another adventure with Captain James Tiberius Kirk and the rest of the crew. However, Paramount Pictures is already looking ahead to the fourth adventure in the rebooted continuity established with J.J. Abrams’ 2009 film and they have just revealed one of the surprises that they have up their sleeve for it.
Paramount, Bad Robot, and Skydance officially announced today in a press release that Chris Pine and company will return to a theater near you for another voyage sometime in the near future. Though a director has not been named yet, the script will be written by J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay, who provided a draft for the third movie before Simon Pegg and Doug Jung took over. But the biggest news of the announcement is that Chris Hemsworth will be returning to the franchise as Captain Kirk’s father, George Kirk. With the Australian actor’s stock rising even more as of late with the new ‘Ghostbusters’, ‘Thor: Ragnarok’, and ‘Avengers: Infinity War’, it makes perfect sense that ‘Star Trek’ would want to capitalize on Hemsworth’s current stardom. Here’s a little tease of what’s to come in the next chapter of the series:
In the next installment of the epic space adventure, Chris Pine’s Captain Kirk will cross paths with a man he never had a chance to meet, but whose legacy has haunted him since the day he was born: his father.
One thing that the press release didn’t touch on though is the fate of Anton Yelchin’s character, Ensign Pavel Chekov. The young actor who played Chekov in the past three installments tragically passed away last month. So does this mean that the production will recast the part for the upcoming untitled fourth film? Or will the main navigator of the Enterprise be left out of the movies from here on out? We’ll have more on this story as details become available.
