Wonder-Woman-Lynda

Stylish director Nicholas Winding Refn (‘Drive’, ‘The Neon Demon’) recently admitted that he would love to direct a female superhero movie and selected ‘Batgirl’ as his potential muse.  But a few years ago, Refn campaigned hard to get the opportunity to helm ‘Wonder Woman’ for Warner Brothers, stating that he was “born to make” the film.

Of course, Patty Jenkins ultimately won the directing gig on ‘Wonder Woman’, but while promoting ‘The Neon Demon’, Refn revealed that he had an early meeting with WB, but that the studio balked at his assertion that ‘Mad Man’ star Christina Hendricks play the Amazon Princess.  What’s interesting is that Hendricks actually had a number of Wonder Woman fans’ stamp of approval to play the lead.  It’s unclear why WB didn’t want her in the film, but it may simply be because Hendricks isn’t a proven film star.

Refn is clearly a fan, as Hendricks has appeared in his films ‘Drive’ and ‘The Neon Demon’, which is playing now.  She is currently shooting ‘Bad Santa 2’ and ‘Pottersville’ and recently wrapped ‘Fist Fight’.  Refn meanwhile, is working on his upcoming TV series ‘Les Italiens’.

Gal Gadot seemed to sway skeptics with her turn as Wonder Woman in ‘Batman V Superman’, so fans are already anticipating her starring role in Jenkins’ film.

But a Refn-directed ‘WW’ with Hendricks may have proven intriguing.  What do you think?  Would you have liked to have seen what they could have come up with?

‘Wonder Woman’ directed by Patty Jenkins and starring Gal Gadot, Chris Pine, Robin Wright, Connie Nielsen, Danny Huston, David Thewlis, Ewen Bremner, Saïd Taghmaoui, Elena Anaya, and Lucy Davis will be released on June 23, 2017.
