Up until now, next year’s solo ‘Wolverine’ movie has been referred to as ‘Wolverine 3’ because 20th Century Fox hadn’t announced an official title.  We do know that the story is based at least partially on the comic book story ‘Old Man Logan’.  But when it comes to numbering, things get confusing.  Hugh Jackman has starred in two prior solo ‘Wolverine’ movies: 2009’s ‘X-Men Origins: Wolverine’ and 2013’s ‘The Wolverine’.  But the first movie was a financial disappointment and met with a thumbs down from fans.  Then it got wiped out by ‘X-Men: Days of Future Past’.  So do we still count it?

Turns out, nope.  Fox isn’t assigning a numeral to the upcoming ‘Wolverine’ movie, but it appears that the studio has settled on a name (or two).  According to one source:

This is not confirmed by Fox, so it may not be etched in stone just yet.

Weapon-XWeapon X was the code name that the government applied to Logan when he was being experimented on, in order to turn him into an unstoppable killing machine.  It was also the title of the comic book story which fleshed out his hidden backstory several years after his introduction.  Film goers got a nifty homage to this storyline in ‘X-Men: Apocalypse’ with a tease of things to come.

Now the question is, will ‘Weapon X’ the movie pick up threads from ‘Apocalypse’ or mine the ‘Old Man Logan’ story?  Because the two are pretty far removed from one another.

Then again, even though some of the X-Movies have used names from comic book stories, and even story beats, none has been an exact adaptation of one.  So most likely, despite the fact that many sources have spilled that the new chapter “adapts” ‘Old Man Logan’, the actual film will most likely be an original story that merely borrows from various comic sources.

Also… *sigh* haven’t we seen Hugh Jackman submerged in water with diodes attached to him enough?  Hopefully this new film will look more toward the future and stop dwelling in the past.

What do you think of ‘Weapon X’ as a name for the last Jackman Wolverine film?

‘Weapon X’ or ‘Wolverine: Weapon X’ will be directed by ‘The Wolverine”s James Mangold.  Thus far, we know it stars Hugh Jackman, Patrick Stewart, Richard E. Grant, Boyd Holbrook, Stephen Merchant, Elise Neal and Eriq La Salle.  The film arrives on March 3, 2017.
