the Predator

We’ve been hearing rumblings about Shane Black’s ‘The Predator‘ which will continue the mainstream series for quite some time and now that it is next on his plate he has started to share some ideas of what he has in mind. From the time period of the film to mentions of Arnold Schwarzenegger, Black gives away some big picture details without actually elaborating on the plot or casting for the film. It’s a movie that I have high hopes for as we’ve learned that it will be a continuation and not a reboot but one that could just as easily flop if not handled well.

When asked if the film would be happening soon he responded quite cagily by just saying that “It would seem so.” However, when prompted to expand on the answer, Black stated:

“Well it means that I’m working on the script, and barring an act of God, a safe from the sky, there’s nothing that suggests it won’t be the next thing, and I’m getting more and more excited day by day. I mean, there’s great Predator movies, but to actually play with the idea of making it an event, not necessarily in scale—it doesn’t have to be huge—but it just has to feel like a Predator movie you want to see in the summer and line up for it. And that’s what we’re going for. Let’s get back to the excitement and innovation of that original movie where it felt fresh. I just want to find a way to make it feel fresh and that’s what we’re trying to do.”

So while the script isn’t done quite yet it does seem that he has a solid idea on where it’s going. The big question that came next though is if Schwarzenegger would be back. It didn’t work out that great in ‘Terminator: Genisys‘ but I’m pretty sure we can all agree that it wasn’t Arnold’s fault that the film faired so poorly. So, will we see him again?

“We have not talked about it, which is good because I’m not supposed to talk about it anyway. Not supposed to talk about details of the script. And I shouldn’t.”

The perfect evasive answer. He was promised that sharing the details wouldn’t get him in trouble which doesn’t at all seem to be holding him back from giving a straight forward answer:

“[mock laughter] Haha! Trouble! Who cares! I think it’s something we’re looking into, and as this thing evolves and takes on more of a shape, we’ll figure out how best to honor the tradition of what is really a remarkable first movie and even parts of the rest of them as well.”

The most telling answer about what the film was answered in a short and to the point manner. When asked when the film would take place, Black responded:

“This one will be set in present day.”

So a modern Predator film could see an old Arnold somehow play into the mix. I would hope they don’t make him a main character, but if they call him in as a specialist, especially if they don’t announce it in any of the trailers or early promotional work, it could be quite effective.

Are you looking forward to ‘The Predator’? Do you think that Shane Black will be able to move the series forward while honoring the films that have come before it? Share your thoughts below!

‘The Predator’ is currently scheduled to be released on March 2nd, 2018.
