Search for the Next Mythbusters

After 14 seasons, fans said goodbye to Adam Savage and Jamie Hyneman as the last episode of ‘Mythbusters’ aired on the Discovery channel, but was it really goodbye? Well, it was for Savage and Hyneman as Discovery’s sister network, The Science Channel, will be reviving the series but with a reality twist!

Before restarting the series, the Science Channel will need to find new hosts – and that’s where the reality twist comes in. The network plans on holding a reality game show called ‘Search for the New Mythbusters’ were the winner(s) will get to be the new buster(s) of the myths.

Repeats of ‘Mythbusters’ can currently been seen on The Science Channel and with such an enormous fanbase, it’s easy to see why the network may not want to fully hang those safety glasses up. “When I got to the network and we clearly identified MythBusters as a franchise and something that was important to Science Channel and Discovery, and it was such a beloved show, I didn’t want to let it go,” says Science Channel General Manager Marc Etkind. “So we looked really closely at what would be the best way to keep it going and invigorate it and thought, ‘Let’s host a worldwide search for the next MythBusters.'”

Applications are currently being accepted for the reality series which is slated to begin filming between June and September 2016. According to Etkind, the ideal candidates would be “people who have building skills and are naturally inquisitive” as well as “people who don’t mind getting embarrassed a little bit, who ask lots of questions and have the skills and knowledge to put those to the test.”

From the submissions, 15 participants will be chosen to appear on the reality show where they will solve challenges that would involve determining whether a myth was true or not. Some of these challenges will be re-examining myths from the original ‘Mythbusters’ series while others will be new ones not yet tackled by Savage and Hyneman. Each episode will have a panel of judges who have been involved with the original series who will then eliminate each contestant until a winner (or winners) has been decided.

From there, according to Etkind, the new ‘Mythbusters’ series will then be tailored to what this new winning host or hosts will bring to the show, meaning fans could see a whole new format to the revived series:

“We’ll see who emerges victorious and from those folks determine what the best format is. It’s a long-running goal for Science Channel to have MythBusters on the air.”

Of course long time fans would insist that instead of having this reality show to find a new host, the network could just have rehired Kari Byron, Grant Imahara and Tory Belleci who already have what it takes to host the new series.

Anyway, if you think you have what it takes to be a Mythbuster, head over to the Science Channel website for all the rules and requirements to submit an application!
