SPOILER ALERT: This article addresses the ENDING of ‘Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice’ so if you haven’t seen it yet, TURN BACK NOW!
For readers of comic books, the ending of Zack Snyder’s ‘Batman V Superman’ wasn’t a huge shock. In the comics, Doomsday was responsible for the death of Superman in a famous storyline from the 1990s. And the movie, slightly mirrored that, minus Maxima and Bloodwynd.
Now, Snyder is opening up about the (perhaps) controversial decision to kill off one third of DC’s Trinity in this film, when there are still so many major films to come, including the two ‘Justice League’ flicks. How will this seeming development impact that film?
“I felt like we had to kill Superman in this movie in order for us to have been serious with the entire premise of the film. And that’s not to say that he clearly is gone forever.
“I wanted Bruce Wayne to build the Justice League. I felt like with Superman around, it’s a different conversation when you create the Justice League, right? It’s like, ‘Me and Superman, we want to make a Justice League.’ [Other heroes would be] like, ‘Okay, yeah, I’ll join!’ I just feel like Bruce Wayne having to go out and find these seven samurai by himself, that’s a lot more interesting of a premise.
“I also I felt like, without Superman, there is definitely a vulnerability to the team that they’re gonna need to figure something out, you know? Superman does represent the powerful. He’s the Michael Jordan of heroes, he’s gonna score.”
Snyder directed both ‘Man of Steel’ and ‘Batman V Superman’ and is set to helm ‘Justice League – Part One’. Is he right? Is Superman too easy a rallying point? In the original comics, neither Batman nor Superman were founding Justice League members, although they joined very shortly thereafter. In the recent New 52 comics, Superman and Batman co-founded the League in the midst of an invasion by alien warlord Darkseid, with Wonder Woman, Green Lantern (Hal Jordan), Aquaman, The Flash and Cyborg. Green Lantern is the one member not slated to be included in the new film.
‘Batman V Superman’ is playing now.
‘Justice League – Part One’ is due on November 17, 2017.
