voltron-header-1

Netflix is reviving the cult classic 80s anime ‘Voltron’ for a new generation with their new original series ‘Voltron: Legendary Defender’.  The 13-episode first season will be available later this year with footage due to premiere this weekend at WonderCon.

But here is your first look at the new lion-construct mecha:

Voltron

The new show follows  the formula of the original series by having five young pilots, Keith, Lance, Hunk, Pidge and Shiro, who pilot the multicolored robotic lion tanks that combine into Voltron.  Shiro is clearly the Sven of this gathering, so don’t get too attached to him.  Together, these heroes form “the last line of defense for Arus and other planets against an evil alien force led by King Zarkon.”

Reportedly, the creators were aiming for a “Game of Thrones feel with some humor.”  Uhhhh… okay?  What I assume this means, is that they wanted broad sweeping action, not… y’know incest and nudity and stuff.  But it appears that this revamp is looking to not only target modern kids but adult fans of the original.

Co-executive producer Lauren Montgomery, stated:

“We’re trying to keep as much of that classic feel to it as we can, because ultimately we have huge amounts of nostalgia for (the original) show…  Not everything is solved by Voltron alone.  Sometimes they need to beat something just as the lions. Sometimes they just do it as themselves fighting as men.”

Executive producer Joaquim Dos Santos added:

“You actually feel like, ‘Oh man, is Voltron going to get out of this one?’ There are some of those encounters they just manage to survive.”

Hopefully, this weekend will also see the announcement of when this new series becomes available to stream on Netflix.

Are you excited to see new, grittier adventures of ‘Voltron’?
