Fans of Andrew Garfield as ‘The Amazing Spider-Man‘ will never see a third installment but actor Chris Cooper (‘11.22.63′,’American Beauty’) says that not only was a very strange deleted scene shot which included his character but that it would have helped setup future installments of the franchise. While on screen we saw Dane DeHaan take up the mantle of the Green Goblin, it was actually a return of Norman Osborn that was hinted at in this deleted scene. Most of us are sighing in relief that Marvel Studios gets to play with the wallcrawler and include him in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but fans of the world of Garfield’s characters should get a kick out of this as we’ve got a bit of ‘What If’ to share with you.

Set pictures had Cooper’s severed and frozen head show up years back and it looks as if this wasn’t just a one off but from an entirely deleted scene. In fact, Cooper had been “guaranteed” a bigger role in the third installment. As he tells it:

“Well, we shot the scene — it’s so weird — but it didn’t make it into ‘Spider-Man 2.’ I’m sure it would probably have been one of the opening scenes in ‘Spider-Man 3’ if they had gone ahead. But he was coming back. It’s very bizarre, what they came up with.”

With Cooper not being an actor who would usually only show up for about 2 minutes of a movie, it should seem like a no brainer that he could somehow return. If you recall in the scene after his death, his body was being scanned by a green laser which probably would have helped lead into this. A couple years back the very severed head shot that was floating around that hinted at this scene can still be seen thanks to the magic of Twitter:

While groundwork had been laid for a new Sinister Six film, it looks like Norman might have ended up being the one behind it. With his body gone and a new one being put in place, it seems that they might have wanted him to look more like the Green Goblin from the Ultimate Universe.

spider-man-dead

Or perhaps the suit based off of the Ultimate Spider-Man cartoon?

THE GREEN GOBLIN

One of those two would be my guess at least.
